We always carry four pieces of flat wood to put under the stabilizer jacks on the four corners of our trailer. It gives the jack a nice firm base and it keeps it from sinking into soft ground. It also keeps the bottom of the jack from picking up mud when you retract it for towing.

Bit lazy really but we us pads fixed all the time and held in place with a pin see pic bellow

I use the plastic pads AND blocks of wood.....im over cautious I know.
Don't stop me getting that sinking feeling though....or is that just when the mother-inlaw rings to say she is popping up on site for the day.
